“The location of Ellicott’s new hot spot conveniently places it to be the perfect sanctuary for student study sessions. Whether students are looking for a quiet study space, a social hangout, or a spot to unwind, The Landing has cemented itself as a vibrant and versatile addition to campus life.” – Krista Lisanti of Subject (February, 2025)
Summary
In partnership with the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) and The State University of New York, University at Buffalo, Mach Architecture designed and led the introduction of a vibrant and bold “Front Door” at North Campus’ Ellicott Complex.
Part addition, part renovation, our project impacted 26,296 square feet of space. The Landing is both the gateway to and heart of Ellicott, with a thoughtful design that aimed to resolve accessibility challenges, foster social engagement, and provide student-centered areas for connection.
Originally designed in 1974 by Davis Brody & Associates, the Ellicott Complex’s ground-level interface suffered from few clear entry points, lack of visibility, and static student spaces. We incorporated transparency and material contract to addresses this, thereby enhancing pedestrian movement and reinforcing connectivity to the greater campus.
It was our mission to respect Ellicott’s character while introducing strategic refinements. A beveled limestone cornice contrasts the original brick for a clear old-to-new transition. Expanded glazing breaks down the fortress-like perception to create a visually connective and inviting presence. A two-story volume, skylit stair, and a colonnade of columns guide students from the ground level to the second-story terrace.
The Landing is an adaptable social anchor with spaces that support study, relaxation, collaboration, and engagement. Soft seating, communal tables, soundproof booths, and a social staircase make for a more enriching and supportive campus experience.
